On a crisp, sunlit morning, growers of all experience levels gathered at Millsap Farms for a hands-on high tunnel workshop that proved to be as educational as it was community-driven. Hosted by the ever-welcoming Curtis Millsap and his family, the event combined practical learning with the warm sense of connection that Millsap Farms is known for.

The day began with coffee in hand and tools at the ready. Participants who had been prompted before they arrived to review the Climate Smart Agricultural Practices video on high tunnels, were eager to jump straight into building a high tunnel structure, guided by the expert knowledge of Curtis Millsap. The collaborative energy was palpable as attendees learned by doing, discovering the nuances of construction techniques and discussing the benefits of high tunnels for extending the growing season and improving crop resilience.

Mid-morning brought a unique opportunity to tour other varieties of high tunnels on the farm. Curtis shared his insights into the design, operation, and maintenance of different structures, offering valuable comparisons that sparked questions and lively discussions among the group. The tours highlighted the versatility of high tunnels and their potential for tailored applications in diverse farming contexts.

Lunch was a special treat as Jason Hirtz of Box Turtle Farms joined the workshop to share his innovative approach to farming under cover. Jason's presentation provided a fascinating look into why he transitioned his entire production to high tunnels and how he has adapted materials and methods to optimize his operation. His real-world examples and practical advice added an invaluable layer to the day’s learning.

The afternoon saw the group complete the high tunnel structure they had started in the morning. By the end of the workshop, the sense of accomplishment was tangible. As tools were set down and the last connections were secured, participants celebrated not just the structure they had built, but the knowledge and camaraderie they had gained.

Exhausted but fulfilled, attendees left Millsap Farm with smiles on their faces, hearts full of inspiration, and a deeper appreciation for the power of shared learning. The workshop was more than just an opportunity to build and learn—it was a testament to the strength of the agricultural community and the value of coming together to grow, both literally and figuratively.
