Breaking Free: Building a Future Beyond Industrial Agriculture

Craig Watts

Contract Grower Transition Program Director

Craig Watts is a leading advocate for farm animal welfare and contract poultry farmers, using his firsthand experience within the industrial farming system to drive meaningful change. A former contract chicken grower for Perdue,Craig spent decades raising concerns about the power large meat companies wield over farmers and the impact industrial production practices can have on both animals and rural communities.

In 2014, Craig courageously partnered with Compassion in World Farming USA to expose animal welfare concerns within the poultry industry, sparking national and international conversations about conditions for farm animals. His story garnered widespread attention, including coverage by The New York Times and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, and earned him recognition as Constantine Cannon's 2015 Whistleblower of the Year.

Today, Craig serves as Contract Grower Transition Program Director for the Socially Responsible Agriculture Project (SRAP), where he helps farmers navigate pathways away from industrial animal agriculture and toward more sustainable, humane, and economically viable alternatives. In2026, Craig received the ASPCA Farm Animal Welfare Award in honor of his tireless work to change the industry. Through his advocacy, public testimony, and unwavering commitment to reform, Craig has become a powerful voice for both farm animals and the farmers who care for them.
